Welcome to Reach Volunteering. We are a community and registered charity that connects people, skills and good causes.

To apply for this role, and any other on our platform, you need to be based in the UK, have at least three years of experience using the skills you wish to volunteer in a professional capacity or have lived experience (for trustee roles). Read more about our criteria.

As Chair of Trustees you will lead the Board in oversight and managing changes in work preventing children and young people getting involved with drugs, gangs and other factors which contribute to knife crime

What will you be doing?

Superkidz is looking for a new Chair of Trustees who will lead on the governance of a programme of change following the retirement of our influential Founder and Manager.  A newly appointed Executive Manager is providing executive leadership of this change working alongside the incoming Chair and the existing Board.

Each Trustee is a Director of Superkidz (a company limited by guarantee with charitable status) and attends five evening meetings a year (a mixture of zoom and in person meetings) and an extended Saturday morning or weekday evening strategy meeting once a year.  There are currently four Trustees and the current Chair is due to stand down at the end of January. Each brings different skills and experience encompassing education, finance, voluntary sector best practice, fundraising, monitoring and evaluation, local knowledge and awareness. We are also recruiting a new Treasurer.

Trustees through the Executive Manager have oversight of a team of Local Community Leaders and workers most of whom have lived experience of the issues facing our children young people and their families.

We also retain a freelance professional Accountant, a fundraising liaison manager/administrator.

There will be an induction programme for the Chair, covering visits to the clubs, meetings with staff and service users, induction into the theory of change, and financial background to the charity.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for a new Chair of the Board who is committed to using their time and skills to oversee a changing organisation.

We are looking for a Chair of Trustees who will

  • lead the governance required for the changes underway following the retirement of the Founder of the Charity
  • with the Executive Manager, other Trustees and staff, oversee the development of strategy and operational plans
  • meet regularly with the Executive Manager, offering management, appraisal and support as necessary
  • be the emergency point of contact for the Manager in safeguarding and other issues
  • encourage other Trustees in the fulfilment of their roles.

We are looking for someone with

  • experience and understanding of governance in a small/medium sized charity
  • commitment and passion for the Superkidz model and ethos
  • a flexible approach
  • attention to detail
  • a creative approach to solving problems
  • a broad understanding of charity law and the requirements of charity reporting and accountability
  • a good understanding of safeguarding requirements
  • a good understanding of HR law and best practice
  • an understanding of the barriers preventing children/young people's achievement
  • employment in a education or youth/children's work organisation
  • vulnerable children/young people facing acute disadvantage, domestic violence, street violence and crime

What difference will you make?

This is important transformational work, that helps young people and families turn their lives around against all the odds. The case study below demonstrates the sort of issues our young people face. Our well developed resilience model (TGIM) involves tackling the underlying causes, but also more direct interventions both during and following incidents. In order for this work to continue, we need a good Chair who can ensure the charity's stability and long term development. We'd like you to consider doing this, and so being part of the team dealing with issues such as those below.

"At the end of 2021 our young offenders group were outside the hall where they meet. A group from a rival gang turned up in a taxi and leapt out wielding machetes. Our Local Community Leader, Grant, who was running the group managed to get them all into the hall and lock the doors. They were not carrying knives, we believe because of the work we had done with them about the risks of carrying knives, and we are hugely grateful for this. The situation could have been very much worse if they had.  Grant's quick thinking and knowledge of the people and situation - he had been coming to Superkidz since the age of 8 - demonstrates how important our grass roots approach is."

Superkidz works both to prevent this sort of thing happening but also to support young people when it does.

Before you apply

For interested candidates we will arrange a telephone conversation with the Executive Manager, then a visit to the groups/office and meetings with a small group of other Trustees. If Trustees feel a candidate is a good fit with our needs, we will then take up references.
