Welcome to Reach Volunteering. We are a community and registered charity that connects people, skills and good causes.

To apply for this role, and any other on our platform, you need to be based in the UK, have at least three years of experience using the skills you wish to volunteer in a professional capacity or have lived experience (for trustee roles). Read more about our criteria.

An exciting opportunity to lead an innovative charity.

What will you be doing?

Join neurobetter as our Chair of Trustees and help shape a more inclusive, supportive world for people with neurodivergence and mental health challenges. We are a newly established and ambitious charity, founded to improve lives through advocacy, support, and systemic change. As Chair, you’ll be at the heart of our mission - guiding our strategic development, championing good governance, and supporting our dynamic CEO and passionate Board of Trustees.

We are looking for a collaborative, committed leader who can bring out the best in others. You’ll steer the Board to ensure decisions are robust and inclusive, promote accountability, and help foster an environment of openness and curiosity. You’ll work closely with our CEO, offering guidance, thought partnership, and a sounding board for big decisions. As the public face of the Board, you’ll help represent neurobetter to partners, funders, and stakeholders, building relationships that help sustain and grow our impact.

You’ll also play a key role in nurturing the Board itself - overseeing trustee recruitment, induction, and development to build a team as diverse and thoughtful as the communities we serve.

We welcome candidates from all backgrounds and actively encourage applications from individuals with personal or lived experience of neurodivergence or mental health challenges. You don’t need to have chaired a Board before, but we’re looking for someone with a track record of leadership, strong strategic thinking, and a real commitment to inclusion. Neurobetter is a neuro-affirming charity and many of our Trustees, staff members and volunteers represent the whole spectrum of neurodiversity.

This is an exciting time to join neurobetter. We are early in our journey, with a huge opportunity to shape our future direction and reach. If you believe in the power of people and community to drive change - and if you’re ready to lead with purpose, compassion, and integrity - we’d love to hear from you.

What are we looking for?

Our Chair will bring a thoughtful, inclusive, and neuro-affirming approach to leadership. They understand that great leadership is not about hierarchy or ego, but about creating the conditions where others can thrive. They are committed to shared decision-making, valuing a diversity of perspectives, and ensuring all voices - especially those often marginalised - are heard and respected.

They have experience of leading with empathy, curiosity, and clarity. Whether through professional, voluntary, or lived experience, they’ve developed the ability to hold space for complexity and difference, while staying focused on a common purpose. They know how to lead a team with care - building trust, encouraging challenge, and nurturing a culture where people feel psychologically safe to be themselves.

Our Chair either brings lived experience of neurodivergence or mental health challenges, or has made a conscious effort to listen, learn and advocate in ways that centre neurodivergent voices. They are not looking to ‘fix’ people, but to help shift systems and mindsets, championing neurodiversity as a strength and driving forward change with integrity.

They understand governance and the importance of accountability, but they also know that compassion and structure are not mutually exclusive. They help ensure that neurobetter remains grounded in its mission, legally sound, and strategically focused - while holding true to its values of inclusion, transparency and dignity.

Above all, they are someone who leads with purpose, patience, and humility - bringing out the best in others, while modelling the kind of leadership our sector and society need more of.

What difference will you make?

As our Chair of Trustees, your impact will be transformative. You’ll help shape the strategic direction and governance of a charity committed to changing the narrative around neurodivergence and mental health. Your leadership will ensure that neurobetter is a strong, transparent, and effective organisation - able to grow sustainably and amplify the voices of those too often unheard.

Your guidance will support the CEO to lead with confidence, while your stewardship of the Board will help trustees thrive in their roles and make meaningful contributions. Your voice as a public advocate for the charity will help build credibility, influence, and crucial partnerships with funders, policymakers, and the wider community.

Perhaps most importantly, your commitment to inclusion, integrity, and innovation will help ensure that neurobetter’s work reflects the real needs of the people we serve. You’ll help set the tone for a culture that values lived experience, shares power, and centres compassion - paving the way for long-term impact.

With your support, neurobetter will be better equipped to deliver on its mission: improving lives, tackling stigma, and building a world where neurodivergent people with mental health challenges are properly understood, supported, and empowered.

Before you apply

Please send a cover letter outlining your background, experience, skills and suitability to the role via the Reach platform.

We will keep this post open until a suitable candidate has been found, so suitable candidates will be invited to an informal virtual interview soon after reviewing their application. It is therefore advisable to apply sooner rather than later. We will ensure the informal virtual interview can be adapted for applicants requiring any reasonable adjustments, and questions will be shared in advance for full transparency.

If you have any questions about the role or would like the opportunity to discuss anything before submitting an application, please contact us via the Reach platform.
