Self Help UK seeks a Chair to lead its next phase, driving innovation and peer support initiatives to empower communities. This pivotal role shapes its 42-year mission of self-help and community support.

What will you be doing?

Self Help UK is entering an exciting new phase, shaping a fresh strategy that builds on its 42-year legacy of peer support. To drive this transformation, we seek an experienced and visionary Chair of Trustees. This pivotal role will lead a newly refreshed Board, ensuring strategic development, strong governance, and financial oversight while championing our mission to empower communities.

The ideal candidate will bring leadership experience, a passion for self-help initiatives, and the ability to guide the CEO and Board in navigating challenges. They will also support fundraising efforts, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement, helping Self Help UK expand its reach and impact.

What are we looking for?

Essential

  • Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of Trusteeship and adhering to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty, and leadership. 
  • Commitment to the charity’s objects, aims, and values and willingness to devote time to carry out responsibilities. 
  • Strategic and forward-looking vision in relation to the charity’s objects and aims. 
  • Good, independent judgement, political impartiality and the ability to think creatively in the context of the organisation and external environment.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to respect the confidences of colleagues.
  • Balancing tact and diplomacy with willingness to challenge and constructively criticise.

Desirable

  • Prior experience of committee/trustee work.
  • Knowledge of the type of work undertaken by the organisation.
  • A wider involvement with the voluntary sector. 
  • Experience of chairing meetings, committee work, some experience of charity finance, charity fundraising. • Leadership skills exercised through a period change.

What difference will you make?

Strategy & Governance

Ensure the Board effectively develops and approves strategy aligned with Self Help UK's mission. Oversee efficient charity operations, safeguarding beneficiaries' interests and stakeholder concerns. Uphold governance, risk management, and compliance with legal requirements. Foster Board diversity, ensuring necessary skills and experience. Maintain transparency and accountability. Oversee Sub-Committees and ensure high Board performance through appraisals and trustee management.

Guidance & Support to the Chief Executive

Lead CEO appointment and salary approval. Provide oversight, partnership, and operational support, including personnel management.

Financial Oversight

Ensure sound financial management with the Board, approving budgets and maintaining high financial standards.

Advocacy & Fundraising

Leverage networks to support donor engagement, fundraising, and profile-raising nationally and internationally.

Board Meetings

Lead meetings, encourage discussion, summarize key points, and ensure decisions are implemented.
