Visitors from Fifth Day

Welcome to Reach Volunteering. We are a community and registered charity that connects people, skills and good causes.

To apply for this role, and any other on our platform, you need to be based in the UK, have at least three years of experience using the skills you wish to volunteer in a professional capacity or have lived experience (for trustee roles). Read more about our criteria.

Football Journeys seeks a new Chair of Trustees to lead the charity's growth.

We use football and film to unite diverse young people.

We need a leader with board experience, passion for youth development.

What will you be doing?

You will have demonstrable leadership experience in a professional organisation or developed in some other setting, an understanding of how boards work and what makes for good governance. We imagine you will have worked with a board, either as a board member or as an executive, but you don’t need to have experience of being a Chair. We are keen that whoever is appointed has the experience and profile to be a compelling ambassador for the charity.

In addition to the responsibilities for overseeing a charity which are shared by all board members, the Chair has a particular leadership role which covers the following:

  • Leading the board, ensuring trustees have relevant and accurate information and contribute their skills and experience.
  • Chairing meetings, ensuring open and respectful dialogue leading to clear decision-making.
  • Working with the Treasurer and Director to ensure the charity’s financial stability and resilience.
  • Supporting the Director, acting as critical friend and providing guidance and regular appraisals.
  • Ensure strong governance, compliance with the governing document and the requirements of the Charity Commission, Companies House and others as needed.
  • Leading on external relations on behalf of the board, including acting as ambassador and spokesperson as appropriate and encouraging the participation of other trustees.

What are we looking for?

We anticipate the new Chair will have:

  • An understanding of the experiences of and issues faced by young people today, particularly those living in disadvantaged areas and facing barriers to realising their potential
  • A strong commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and be supportive of the charity working towards a better connected and more equitable society
  • Networks and connections relevant and valuable to FJ
  • A working knowledge of management and governance, and an understanding of the legal responsibilities of trusteeship
  • Experience of understanding the financial performance of an organisation
  • Preferably previous experience on a board of a charity or similar organisation

What difference will you make?

We anticipate the Chair will be excited to:

  • Keep up to date with the programmes, attend events, review reports and discuss progress with the Director and trustees
  • Champion FJ and its work, helping to raise our profile in different sectors
  • Actively support the team in fundraising and advocacy for philanthropic and commercial support for FJ
  • Monitor and identify the internal and external risks to the charity and ensure mitigations are in place

Before you apply

Please submit a CV and a cover letter (up to two pages) outlining your interest in the role. Applications are open through July and August 2024. The interview stage will take place during the first two weeks of September 2024.
