HBBS Counselling seeks a Chair of Trustees to lead our Board in delivering vital counselling services across Havering, Brentwood, and surrounding areas.
This is an opportunity to lead the Trustee Board of an organization that makes a tangible difference in our community, supporting both adults and children through life's most challenging moments.
Your experience will help guide HBBS through its ambitious 2025-2027 strategy, working with our CEO to ensure we maintain our service delivery while developing sustainable funding streams and strategic partnerships.
Previous experience as a Trustee in the charity sector is preferable. This opportunity may suit an individual wanting to make the step up to Chair position.
You will attend quarterly Board meetings and relevant sub-committees (Clinical, Business Development, and Finance), ensuring robust governance while promoting innovation in our service delivery.
We are looking for the following skills in the prospective Chair :
Governance experience and strategic leadership skills
Ability to build effective relationships with key stakeholders, including schools, and community organizations
Financial acumen to oversee our mixed funding model of grants, client fees, and donations
Commitment to our values of compassion, inclusion, and excellence
Time commitment: Quarterly board meetings, AGM, plus sub-committee attendance and regular stakeholder engagement. Counsellor Location: Ardleigh Green Family Centre. Position: Voluntary
Although this is a counselling charity we do not need expert knowledge of this area from the Chair. The role is to work collaboratively with the fellow trustees and CEO to help the organisation through balanced decision making and to achieve the goals in our strategy plan.
The Trustees are not involved in the day to day operations; we have a CEO and a professional team who do that. This is a leadership role where team working, the ability to make contact with potential funders and represent the charity at local events is important to our future goals.
We will recruit an individual who respects Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership. We are looking for an individual who will :
Provide leadership to the organisation and the board by ensuring that everyone remains focused on the delivery of the organisation’s charitable purposes in order to provide greater public benefit
Bring challenge to the organisation whilst retaining impartiality and objectivity to decision-making
Represent the organisation at functions and meetings; acting as a spokesperson as appropriate
With the Treasurer, ensure the financial sustainability of the organisation and deciding on expenditure levels including remuneration
Ensure that the organisation pursues its stated objects (purposes), as defined in its governing document, by developing and agreeing a long-term strategy
Ensure that the organisation complies with its governing document (ie its trust deed, constitution or memorandum and articles of association), charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations
Ensure that the organisation defines its goals and evaluates performance against agreed targets
Safeguard the good name and values of the organisation
Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation, including having appropriate policies and procedures in place
Address conflict within the board and within the organisation; liaise with the CEO to achieve this
Liaise with the CEO to keep an overview of the organisation’s affairs and to provide support as appropriate
Lead the process of supporting and appraising the performance of the CEO
The Chair of Trustees is a key role in our organisation. Your leadership and commitment will ensure we continue to provide and extend our range of much-needed support and services to our clients.
We would be asking for your Resume and do have a short form for candidates to outline reasons for the application, contact details and references (at a later stage). You can expect some informal talks with Trustees before an interview for the role.
