Are you keen to help protect our area’s natural assets and see its biodiversity increased?

What will you be doing?

We are looking for a dynamic new Chair to steer us through these challenging times.  If you live in the South Hams and have relevant skills and experience – and 1-2 days per week to volunteer - we would love to hear from you.

The South Hams Society was set up almost sixty years ago with the aim of stimulating interest in, and care for, the beauty, history and character of the South Hams and, in particular, the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  It works to encourage high standards of planning and architecture which are in keeping with the landscape and local building traditions, meet local housing and employment needs and promote environmental sustainability. It actively lobbies the Local Planning Authority (SHDC) and others with influence on planning matters, relying on its in-house expertise. It also offers free, impartial advice to others, including individual campaigns and residents groups.

The Society is a registered charity which enjoys a strong membership and financially stability. It is currently run by an active Committee of seven which includes four trustees.

What are we looking for?

The responsibilities of the Chair of the Society include providing leadership for the Society and making sure it delivers on the aims set out in its Constitution, setting agendas and chairing meetings, external representation and networking.

Skills, qualities, interests required:

Interested in/knowledgeable about planning issues, sustainable development, our landscape and the natural world

Able to represent the Society with credibility and passion

Able to work positively and collaboratively with a wide range of people

Good IT skills and able to keep up with the IT requirements of the role

Well organised

Even-handed and tactful; able to deal with conflict and contentious issues

Open to new ideas.

What difference will you make?

We need a chair to steer us through the next period, providing the Committee with leadership and helping to keep us on track. Public concern for environmental and planning issues is high at the moment and you will have the opportunity to make a real difference at the local level, whether by helping the planning team to submit an excellent letter of representation to the local planning authority or by coming up with a new idea for an event to draw the local community in and attract new members.

What's in it for the volunteer?

There is real room to make your mark in this role. There will be lots of opportunities to learn more about our local area, the South Hams, and to network with like-minded organisations, local authorities and others. We will also fund paid training where needed. You will never be bored!
