We’re on the hunt for a visionary Chair to help lead Being The Cure into its next thrilling chapter. Join us as we grow our impact and broaden our reach through powerful character development for our most disadvantaged young people.

What will you be doing?

You may have seen this opportunity advertised before—and you’re not mistaken! We recently welcomed a new Chair who, due to unexpected personal circumstances, had to step down before the handover was complete. While this was a setback, it also means the door is open once more for the right leader to step into this powerful role and shape the future of one of the UK’s most exciting education charities.

If you’re ready to bring strategic insight, compassionate leadership, and a passion for developing the next generation of heroes, this is your moment. Join us as we grow our impact and broaden our reach through powerful character development for our most disadvantaged young people.

About us: At Being The Cure, we envision a world that's Kind, Honest, and Humble. We’re running engaging and impactful Saturday Schools for 120 young people in Newham every year teaching the power of moral values through storytelling and structured play. Now, we're seeking a New Chair to take the reins and collaborate closely with our visionary CEO to steer us towards improved reach and greater impact!

In 24/25, we opened our second Saturday School, doubling our impact and began work with a university partner to evaluate the efficacy of our programme in detail. Our ambitions for 25/26 are to continue strengthening the programme, secure the funding necessary to scale our delivery model and develop robust operations that free up the CEO to have the most impact possible.

Our vision: An honest, kind, humble world.

Our mission: To develop the next generation of society's heroes through our evidence-informed character development that instils honesty, kindness, and humility in every child.

What We Offer: Joining us means more than just volunteering your time; this is an opportunity to:

  • Make a difference – see a difference: Lead a mission-driven organisation dedicated to creating positive change in society and witness firsthand the impact on the young people we serve.
  • Professional growth: Expand your leadership skills and contribute to your personal and professional development.
  • Join a dynamic team: Collaborate with passionate and experienced individuals committed to creating change.
  • Have fun: we believe in the power of joy and make sure we socialise after each of our board meetings, going out for food and enjoying time together.

What are we looking for?

Your role: You will be the guiding force behind our organisation's strategic direction, supporting our CEO to deliver operational excellence and facilitating the effective engagement of our trustees.

  • CEO facilitation: Collaborate closely with the CEO, supporting them to build the systems and culture necessary to effectively deliver the mission and strategic objectives of the charity.
  • Strategic leadership: Provide visionary leadership to the Board, ensuring governance and operations aligns with our mission and strategic objectives.
  • Governance oversight: Oversee governance processes and ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Stakeholder engagement: Foster positive relationships with key stakeholders, including trustees, donors, partners, and the wider community.
  • Board development and engagement: Support the professional development and effective engagement of Board members, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Organisational ambassador: Serve as the public face of Being The Cure, representing our values and mission with passion and integrity.

 Essential:

  • Leadership experience: Demonstrable experience in leadership roles, ideally within the charity or education sector.
  • Strategic vision: Ability to think strategically and drive organizational growth and impact.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire diverse stakeholders many of whom are volunteers.
  • Commitment to mission: Passion for our mission and values, with a dedication to making a positive impact in the community.

 Desirable:

  • Board or Chair experience: Previous experience serving on a Board of Trustees.
  • Sector knowledge: Familiarity with the charity and education sector, including relevant policies and best practices.

Commitment: we anticipate the commitment to be about 20 hours per quarter which includes board meetings and prep, regular catchups with the CEO, attendance at any relevant committees (usually only the Strategy, Finance and Risk Committee), and engagement of the board.

What difference will you make?

In 24/25, we opened our second Saturday School, doubling our impact and began work with a university partner to evaluate the efficacy of our programme in detail. Our ambitions for 25/26 are to continue strengthening the programme, secure the funding necessary to scale our delivery model and develop robust operations that free up the CEO to have the most impact possible.

Our current chair’s perspective: "Being part of the transformative journey with the children at Being The Cure is an amazing experience. The dedicated efforts of our BtC teachers and volunteers truly make a profound impact, empowering children to understand and embrace their own moral compass while actively contributing to the greater good in our community. Collaborating with Vijith (CEO) and our exceptionally qualified and experienced board is fun and inspiring. It constantly challenges me to evolve my thinking and enhance my own professional practice while rewarding me the privilege of witnessing profound positive change in our young people."

Transition in leadership: Our current Chair will be stepping down from their role due to personal reasons. We recently recruited a new Chair who, regrettably, had to step down shortly after their appointment due to unforeseen personal circumstances. As the handover process had not yet been completed, our former Chair, Ben, has kindly agreed to remain in post as Chair of the Board to provide continuity and leadership while we re-advertise the role. He will provide a comprehensive handover and support for the incoming Chair to ensure a smooth and successful integration.
