We are looking for a new Chair of our Board of Trustees. You will help Bookbanks create spaces for conversation, inspiration and community at food banks.

What will you be doing?

Bookbanks is a young charity, looking for a new Chair to lead the next phase of its development.

Bookbanks brings books to food banks. Partnering with food banks, the charity creates enticing pop-up stalls of a wide range of books - free for guests to browse, borrow or keep. The stalls, situated within the food bank, are staffed by volunteers from the book industry, whom the charity trains to use books to connect with people and foster conversations with food bank guests. Launched earlier this year, the charity has distributed over 3,000 books and now operates in four food banks across London and Norfolk. In 2025, it plans to open inside more food banks, in other communities of high need.

In addition to all the duties of a trustee, the Chair will:

  • provide leadership to the Board, ensuring the effective governance and strategic direction of the charity, while championing its mission
  • plan, with the executive team, the regular meetings of the Board, support, and where appropriate, challenge the executive team and ensure that the Board as a whole works in partnership with the executive team.
  • lead Board meetings, ensuring they are focused, productive and inclusive.
  • be responsible for driving the mission of Bookbanks and to hold the executive team to account
  • ensure that the Board incorporates the right balance of skills, knowledge and experience needed to govern and lead the charity.
  • establish and build a strong relationship with the executive ensuring that they are held to account for achieving strategic objectives
  • work closely with the executive team to ensure the Board’s decisions are implemented effectively and the charity operates in line with its mission and values.
  • ensure the charity maintains financial health, evaluates risks, and meets its regulatory and fiduciary responsibilities.act as a spokesperson for the charity and represent it at functions and other meetings with the Bookbanks executive
  • use networks to open doors, raise awareness, and foster new partnerships to support the charity’s mission conduct an annual appraisal for the executive in consultation with other trustees
  • stakeholder engagement, conduct focus groups at our sites to provide the Board with direct feedback from our service users.

What are we looking for?

What are we looking for?

  • Proven leadership experience, ideally as a trustee or chair within the charitable sector
  • Financial acumen and understanding of charity governance and regulations
  • Experience in the literary, publishing, or book industries
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidences
  • Passion for social justice and desire to use books as a tool for change

The Board of Trustees meets quarterly through a mixture of online and in person. While we estimate a time commitment of up to 15 hours per month, as a small charity, there will be times when the Chair will need to be actively involved in the work of Bookbanks beyond preparation and attendance at planned Board meetings and regular liaison with the executive team. Candidates should be willing to travel to London from time to time for meetings and events.

What difference will you make?

  • Over 3% of UK individuals (2.3 million people) are using food banks
  • More than 1 in 12 UK children do not have a single book of their own.
  • Bookbanks works to break the cycle of poverty.
