CoLab Exeter are looking for a dynamic & innovative Chair to lead our committed board and help us on the next stage of our strategy.

What will you be doing?

The overall role of the Chair of Trustees is to maintain an overview of the organisation’s affairs, ensuring that the charity complies with governance best practice and provides support and direction to the Chief Executive.

Supporting the Chief Executive:

  • Work closely with and line manage the Chief Executive
  • Ensure good relationships with the organisations staff, partners, volunteers, beneficiaries and friends.

Leading on Governance:

  • Ensure that the organisation complies with the governing document and any other legislation or regulations, relevant to the structure and nature of the organisation
  • Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation and its financial stability
  • Conduct, with the support of the Chief Executive, the duties associated with running a charity including all yearly statements, reports and audit of accounts in line with relevant legislation
  • Comply with the general responsibilities and duties held by a Trustee of a charitable organisation.

Leading the board of Trustees:

  • Represent and work for the best interests of the organisation
  • Provide insight and challenge in the interests of the organisation, as well as, strategic vision and ambitious leadership into the future
  • Be the public face of the organisation's Board and a principle advocate for the values of CoLab Exeter, both locally and nationally Lead the Board in setting and driving the strategic direction for the organisation and ensure that it is monitored by the Board
  • Ensure the Board is able to fulfil its responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the organisation
  • Plan and Chair Board meetings and annually review the organisations performance
  • Address any conflicts of interest among the members of the Board, and ensure all Board members have access to appropriate induction, training, development and information relating to their role
  • Work with Board members to plan succession, openly and widely recruiting diverse board members with relevant skills and experience
  • Monitor to ensure that decisions taken at Board meetings are implemented


What are we looking for?


  • Demonstrable experience of building and sustaining relationships with key stakeholders and colleagues to achieve organisational objectives
  • A proven track record of sound judgement and effective decision making
  • A history of impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidences
  • A track record of commitment to promoting equality & diversity
  • Experience of leading in a voluntary capacity (e.g. school governor, previous Board level experience)
  • Experience of and interest in collaborative or integrated working initiatives
  • Experience of and interest in complex needs work
  • A track record of working at a strategic level
  • Able to act as advocate and ambassador for the organisation


  • Willingness to attend Board meetings and be available for and respond to telephone calls and electronic communication from senior management team
  • Willingness to attend occasional daytime and evening events.

What difference will you make?

The last few years have been about starting out and moving the organisation from Exeter CVS to CoLab whilst remaining trusted by those that need us, those that fund us, and those that partner with us. The Board have supported the CoLab team during it's transition, and they too have adapted and evolved. There is real appetite now to build on this foundation and take the initiative to the next phase of its development. We are now looking to recruit a dynamic, forward thinking Chair who shares our values and mission; who is excited by this challenge, and who is able to offer the time, commitment, and energy needed to help us realise our ambitions and, as a part of a dedicated team take CoLab Exeter into the next phase of its development.

You will get to work with a fabulous Leadership Team, Board of Trustees and around 30 plus diverse organisations collaborating under one roof and providing key services for some of the most vulnerable of our community from the homeless, men and women in the criminal justice system, refugees, ex-military personnel and those with mental health issues.
