East London Waterworks Park is looking for campaigner volunteers to lead projects in creating our community-owned park

What will you be doing?

East London Waterworks Park is a volunteer-led charity that won a 2024 New London Architecture award and has raised £2m towards buying land from the Department for Education to transform the 14-acre Thames Water Depot on Lea Bridge Road on the border of Waltham Forest and Hackney, into a new biodiverse park with natural swimming ponds, forest schools and community spaces.

We are looking for campaigners to participate in our community-led working group who are growing support of the project.

There is opportunity to lead on projects bringing together how architects, ecologists, community researchers, political campaigners, fundraisers and communications professions to create blue and green community spaces.

Volunteers can choose whether they are involved in the Communications or Governances Circles, which meet fortnightly on Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings online, and spend voluntary time outside of the meeting completing agreed tasks remotely.

What are we looking for?

1. Community Engagement & Leadership:

  • Strong Community Outreach: Build trust and engage diverse communities, including underrepresented groups.
  • Excellent Communication: Effective communication, dialogue, and addressing community concerns.
  • Community Mobilisation: Organise events, motivate action, and foster community participation.

2. Advocacy & Communication:

  • Policy & Advocacy: Understand local regulations and advocate for park creation.
  • Public Speaking: Effectively communicate the park vision to various audiences.
  • Media & Communications: Utilise media to raise awareness and build public support.

3. Project Management & Planning:

  • Project Management: Develop and implement project plans, manage budgets, and volunteers.
  • Resource Management: Secure funding sources and ensure project sustainability.

4. Passion & Commitment:

  • Community Passion: Passion for community development and community-led projects.
  • Environmental Stewardship: Commitment to environmental sustainability and creating a thriving green space.
  • Resilience: Navigate challenges and maintain a positive approach.

5. Skills:

  • Ecological Understanding: Knowledge of local flora and fauna.
  • Fundraising Experience: Experience with fundraising or grant writing.

What difference will you make?

You will have a significant impact on the creation of a new biodiverse community-owned park with free access natural swimming ponds. By leading campaign projects that bring together diverse professionals (architects, ecologists, social researchers, etc.) to collaborate on community infrastructure, volunteers will directly contribute to the development of a park that truly reflects the needs and desires of the local community. Your input will help us craft experiences that inspire, educate, and engage our service users, stakeholders, funders, and the general public, ultimately driving support for the park's mission and ensuring its long-term sustainability.
