What will you be doing?

Square 1 Café operates from the Kingston Environment Centre, 1 Kingston Road, New Malden, KT3 3PE. It is open every Saturday between 12:00 midday and 4:00pm. It operates on 50 Saturdays per year – excluding Xmas and New Year. The setup happens from about 9:00am, and take down between 3:30pm and 4:30pm, depending on how busy the café is that day. The café is for adults; children may attend in the company of an adult guardian.Organisers take turns (one Saturday per month) to run the cafe.

The key deliverable is happy, connected people. They also get fed.

The customers determine what happens at a Square 1 Cafe. No-one gets things "done" to them. Within the aims and ethos of the café you have some flexibility how it is run.

Your role will

Line manage volunteers
Oversee setting up and taking down of cafe at beginning and end of day
Ensure cafe policies are implemented*
Liaise with Save the World Club over supply of consumables
Obtain extra supplies as necessary from local stores (obtaining recompense via expenses)
Resolve any problems on site
Liaise with other agencies over operation of cafe during working day as necessary**

* - chiefly safeguarding and food hygiene; but also Covid hygiene if appropriate
** - e.g. London Ambulance Service, SPEAR, HealthWatch Kingston, RBK

Volunteers will have completed at least a Level 1 Food Hygiene Certificate. All should have an upto date DBS certificate for the Children’s and Adults Workforce.
There are usually 3 or 4 volunteers on any Saturday. 3 is the minimum level.

Before you apply

We would suggest that potential applicants come to the cafe as a customer, as the first step.The cafe is open every Saturday, from 12:00 midday until 4:00pm. It is quieter near the end, if you want to talk to us; conversely it is busy at the start if you want to get a feel for what that is like.

All volunteers receive a short induction, usually via Zoom or similar, once a commitment is made.

We ask you to have, or be prepared to obtain, an Enhanced DBS for the Adults and Children's workforce. We will help you obtain this if necessary.

We will assist you to obtain training in food hygiene, also First Aid / Mental Health First Aid - ifneeded.
