Welcome to Reach Volunteering. We are a community and registered charity that connects people, skills and good causes.

To apply for this role, and any other on our platform, you need to be based in the UK, have at least three years of experience using the skills you wish to volunteer in a professional capacity or have lived experience (for trustee roles). Read more about our criteria.

Birmingham Vernon is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated person to join its staff of Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs). We are a long-established Sea Cadet unit that has provided life-changing opportunities for many young people.

What will you be doing?

The charity is currently looking for volunteers that can support with the delivery of basic sessions to our young people. All volunteers are given free training courses to fully onboard them, and further free inputs to give them base knowledge about subject content.

Training is given to you in order to teach specific subject content, however we are looking for someone with experience in volunteering, education, team management, public speaking or a wide range of life skills which help you provide an amazing educational experience for our young people.

What are we looking for?

You need no prior Cadet or Military skills to join and help get involved, however experience in a working and professional envrionment is key. Skills such as but not inclusively:

Leadership

Public Speaking

IT System use

Fundraising

Safeguarding

We need people who are able to communicate, work well in a team and have basic computer skills - such as accessing emails and basic websites. If this experience is derived from your working life, or from other or previous volunteering is of no issue. We are looking for people who are keen to get involved, learn, and try new things and want to give back to the community.

Our cadets parade twice a week, Tuesdays, and Thursday evenings 18:45 - 21:15. We are looking for someone to be able to commit to at least one parade per week, ideally both and we support flexible volunteering. We also engage in local events on some weekends which are managed and planned well in advance.

You should be confident in speaking to young people and feel that you can provide a positive role model and influence on a young person.

Communication is key, and the team has a wide variety of communication channels for our cadets, parents and next of kin - and internally for our volunteers.

Basic computer skills are ideal, being able to manage/read and reply to emails (email account provided) and be able to navigate an online training module.

All training is provided for safeguarding and onboarding - including modules for basic topics to teach our cadets. We are looking for someone who is willing to try new things, discover a new passion which will then be fully supported.

We want you to grow, develop and discover new skills and have positive impact on a young person’s life.

What difference will you make?

Providing a friendly and educational environment, you will help our young people reach their potential and push themselves to learn more. Our volunteers help our cadets through the Cadet Training Programme (CTP) which puts them on a pathway to promotion and opens up new life changing opportunities.

As they develop and learn more, they achieve qualifications which are nationally recognised and can be used in their day to day lives.

The structure and ethos, taken from today’s Royal Navy and Royal Marines gives our cadets immense pride and a sense of belonging. Your impact as a uniformed or non-uniformed volunteer will help grow their confidence, skills and make them stand out in today’s complex and competitive world.

Before you apply

Please apply through Reach in the first instance. When you have registered interest we will invite you to meet our Commanding Officer and Chairperson either in person or Via teams, so we can get to know you better.

These meetings are informal, and if in person include a tour of our brand new multi million pound Sea Cadet Boat Station.
