Do you love figures, spreadsheets and anything to do with money and people? - Then you will love this role. An experienced accountant or bookkeeper is needed 2 days a week to join our small yet growing social reuse enterprise.
Brights Sparks (trading name of DigiBridge CIC) is a small yet quickly expanding London based, social reuse and recycling enterprise that collects discarded or unwanted household goods and furniture and makes it good for reuse by people who are in need. We have been operating for nearly 10 years selling reusable household furniture items through our two retail outlets (and warehouse), organising community events to raise awareness about reducing waste and reusing items and providing employment for local people, some who find it difficult to get into work as well as lots of volunteering and training opportunities. Our Project Manager and founder has been managing the accounts, but as the number of people we support through volunteering, training, employment and in accessing essential household goods grows, it is just not possible for the him to continue with the detailed financial work too. That's where you come in. We are not a complex enterprise, but knowledge and help with the following would be good: a) VAT returns and PAYE (although we can provide a good induction too). b) producing monthly finance reports (management accounts/P&L/Balance Sheet) from our accounting package c) improving budget preparation and monitoring processes. Most of our operations are computerised, so accessing data and producing reports is made easier. Our accounts are audited externally each year. We have been trading as a community interest company but are exploring registering as a charity in the next year as this will allow us to access new sources of grants and funding, but will mean new processes and regulations. We are a small (approx 15) team spread over 3 sites. If you are interested, there is flexibility to work from home for some of the time but you must be willing to work with the Project Manager/Founder and other staff handling money. We are a mixed /diverse team, so it's easy to feel welcome. We are sure you will enjoy being with us.
- Financial management
- A qualified/experienced accountan
- Ability to read and analyse accounts and financial forecasts and willing to help improve our systems Strong IT skills

What impact the opportunity will have
This is an important role for our social enterprise - it can help us demonstrate what the real impact of our work is on the environment and socially on people's lives in terms of the value of what we do. We can only do that if we have robust financial systems, have the time and capacity to present and analyse our finances well and therefore manage it efficiently in the interests of the people most in need, local communities and the particularly in the interests of improving and reducing the harm to our environment. That's what you can help with through 2 days a week!
What’s in it for the volunteer?
This role can help you keep your interests and skills alive if you are retired, or help you to develop your professional skills and experience in a different environment for a social good. You will learn a lot about the social enterprise/ community sector, retailing, the environment and more. You will also have an enjoyable experience working with the team - who are great fun (but sometimes bordering on the crazy too!).
Either in or out of office hours
Hours are flexible - approx. 2 days per week - with the scope for some of that time to be worked from home. This is an ongoing role.
Please do contact us if you would like to have an informal chat. If you are interested, we will arrange a time to meet to find out more about each other and for you to see our work first hand.
