Take part in managing community led and owned renewable energy projects within the Chelmsford City Council region.
Our current challenge is growth. We need to grow so we can achieve more and have impact across the whole district of Chelmsford, not just our village of Danbury.
We are looking to pursue a range of activities under the broad categories below:
1. Undertake community energy projects: investigate a number of potential larger building roof mount solar projects in Danbury and the wider Chelmsford area, raise share from member investors and execute the projects. These projects need to be financially sound to be able to payback the investment from members and to generate a surplus for the community benefits defined by the members of the society.
2. Undertake a range of activities to help local communities make the transition to a lower carbon lifestyle. A range of projects and events could be undertaken within this remit.
A visioning exercise to determine projects will take place once the board is complete.
This growth needs strong management by a fuller board, which is why four additional board members are required to help run the Society alongside the existing four volunteers. The society is keen that the board represents society well in terms of backgrounds, culture, abilities, experiences, and approaches.
Tasks to be shared among the whole board include: data analytics and energy modelling, project management, design/review of leases, site relationships, volunteer management, procurement, web upgrade, marketing and comms, and admin to name a few. Crucially, we are about to recruit 3 part time paid staff through our huge Lottery funding - we will need a strong board to design what they do, recruit them and manage them to deliver the activity with us.
We need a mix of people who are both technical and those not from an engineering background who can help the community join our journey. You just need to be committed to climate change mitigation, diligent, proactive, imaginative and who will enjoy working with our lovely, driven team.
Management in any of the following: administration (most important), marketing and communications (in terms of strategic marketing, web updates and social media management), data analytics, energy modelling, design/review of leases, site relationships, volunteer management, procurement.
Particular qualities needed: a passion for climate change mitigation, and ability to engage people - especially those who may be hard to engage.
As part of our leadership, you will support and shape our work, growth, and strategic direction, as well as help us achieve our purpose of promoting sustainability through locally generated and locally owned renewable energy. Perhaps as a stronger team, we will influence improved local energy systems too.
This is a vital role, and as a board member (technically a volunteer director), you will have a real opportunity to offer your unique skill set to help the strategic progression of the Society.
We tend to meet as a board online once per month plus occasional additional meetings in person for project-specific activities.
