Welcome to Reach Volunteering. We are a community and registered charity that connects people, skills and good causes.

Join the board of Proper Job Resource Centre to help empower individuals through sustainable living, creative reuse, and community resilience. Make a real impact in a grassroots organisation.

What will you be doing?

Proper Job Resource Centre is an innovative and environmentally-focused charity based in Devon. For over 30 years, we've been diverting waste from landfill, supporting local communities, and promoting sustainable living through creative reuse and education.

We are currently seeking passionate and committed individuals to join our Board of Trustees. As a trustee, you will play a key role in the strategic direction, governance, and long-term sustainability of our organisation. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a unique social enterprise that combines environmental action with community empowerment.

We welcome applications from all backgrounds, especially those with experience in any of the following: finance, fundraising, legal, HR, retail management, environmental policy, or marketing. However, above all, we are looking for people who are enthusiastic about our mission and bring fresh perspectives to our work.

Responsibilities include:

  • Attending monthly board meetings (remote and in person)
  • Supporting strategic planning and decision-making
  • Acting as an ambassador for Proper Job within the community
  • Providing guidance and oversight to ensure we meet our charitable objectives
  • Contributing your skills, knowledge, and insights to strengthen our impact

Whether you're an experienced trustee or new to the role, we offer a welcoming, supportive environment where your input will truly matter.

What are we looking for?

We’re looking for individuals who are passionate about sustainability, community empowerment, and creative solutions to social and environmental challenges. As a trustee, you don’t need to have prior board experience—what matters most is your commitment to our values and your willingness to contribute your time, skills, and insight.

We are particularly interested in people who can bring one or more of the following:

  • Financial expertise – to support budgeting, financial oversight, and strategic planning
  • Fundraising or income generation experience – to help us grow our social enterprise and charitable funding
  • Legal knowledge – particularly in charity, employment, or contract law
  • Retail or operations management – especially in community enterprises or reuse/recycling
  • Environmental or sustainability knowledge – to guide our mission and strengthen our impact
  • Marketing, communications, or digital – to raise our profile and engage more supporters
  • Human resources or people management – to support staff wellbeing and organisational development
  • Governance and strategic planning – to help steer our direction and remain mission-focused

In addition to specific skills, we’re also looking for people with the following qualities:

  • A collaborative and inclusive approach to decision-making
  • The ability to think strategically and objectively
  • A willingness to challenge constructively and ask insightful questions
  • Integrity, accountability, and a strong sense of social purpose
  • A genuine interest in the work of Proper Job and the communities we serve

We are a friendly and informal board that values open dialogue, mutual support, and a shared vision for a greener and fairer future. Training and mentoring can be provided for those new to trustee roles. Trustees typically commit around 4–6 hours a month, including quarterly board meetings and occasional working groups or events.

If you’re excited by the opportunity to help shape the future of a pioneering grassroots charity, we’d love to hear from you.

What difference will you make?

As a trustee, you will directly contribute to the future success of Proper Job, enabling us to continue our work in environmental sustainability and social justice. Your guidance will help shape projects that divert waste from landfill, educate communities about sustainable practices, and support vulnerable individuals through volunteering and employment opportunities. By joining our board, you’re not just giving back—you’re helping build a more resilient, resourceful, and inclusive society.
