Arts Derbyshire are seeking several ambitious and outgoing people who want to help lead, support and grow Arts Derbyshire to fill vacancies on our Board of Trustees.

Could you help support us in delivering its charitable objectives?

What will you be doing?

What it involves

We are looking for a number of Trustees to volunteer their time and play a vital role in making sure that Arts Derbyshire achieves its aims. The Trustees oversee the overall governance and administration of Arts Derbyshire. They ensure that Arts Derbyshire has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge our small team to enable Arts Derbyshire to grow and thrive and, through this, help us to support all artists, organisations and venues in Derbyshire.

We are particularly keen to welcome people with experience in the following areas: Finance, Creative, Health, and Equality Diversity & Inclusion.

Working Sub-Groups

Take part in a working sub-group. Four sub-groups  (Finance, HR inc. Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI), Communications and Fundraising ) meet over Zoom for 1-2 hours, 5-6 times a year.

The Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees carries out seven main functions collectively to support and steer the organisation. Trustees are expected to:

  • Ensure Arts Derbyshire is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit
  • Comply with Arts Derbyshire’s governing document and the law
  • Act in Arts Derbyshire’s best interests
  • Manage Arts Derbyshire’s resources responsibly
  • Act with reasonable care and skill
  • Ensure Arts Derbyshire is accountable to its members, the public and the Charity Commission
  • Undertake short-term roles as and when necessary for the running of the charity. These are taken on in a voluntary capacity and within a flexible time

The Board of Trustees works as a team, making decisions together. Along with the team of Trustees, you will be responsible for deciding and planning how the organisation carries out its purposes. As a Trustee, you will decide with the rest of the team what activities Arts Derbyshire will undertake and think about the resources the charity will need.

Collectively, you will take responsibility for setting the charity’s strategic aims and direction, and agreeing appropriate future plans, operational structures and governance.

What are we looking for?

We are particularly keen to welcome people with experience in the following areas: Finance, Creative, Health, and Equality Diversity & Inclusion.

The Board of Trustees works as a team, making joint decisions. Along with the team of trustees, you will be responsible for deciding and planning how the organisation carries out its purposes. As a trustee you will decide together what activities Arts Derbyshire will undertake and think about the resources it will need.

Collectively, you will take responsibility for setting the charity’s strategic aims and direction, and agreeing appropriate future plans, operational structures and governance.

We are working towards our organisation becoming as  diverse and representative as possible.  We particularly want to encourage applications from people identifying with any of the protected characteristics as defined in the 2010 Equality Act, or who are from less affluent socioeconomic backgrounds.

What difference will you make?

As part of our board you will support and shape our work and strategic direction, as well as help us achieve our purpose in providing strategic direction for arts development in Derbyshire, and building on the unique creative, cultural, natural and heritage assets of our county.

A small organisation with big ambition, we focus on four key strands / areas of activity:

  • Local Capacity Building: we convene networks of arts organisations and practitioners to share knowledge, expertise, training and encourage collaboration.
  • Key Strategy & Policy: we provide a strategic overview of culture in Derbyshire and identify where gaps are leading to people being excluded from accessing cultural opportunities.
  • Investment, Funding & Delivery: we deliver responsive programmes in partnership with key organisations across Derbyshire to maximise our impact and create real change, as well as increasing investment into the Derbyshire arts sector.
  • Assets, Advocacy & Infrastructure: we showcase the cultural activity happening in Derbyshire, and represent Derbyshire’s cultural sector nationally, giving local artists and organisations a voice and a platform.

Before you apply

Please send us an Expression of Interest explaining why this voluntary role interests you, what you feel you could offer Arts Derbyshire, and a copy of your CV.

Experience in the arts is not essential. We particularly want to encourage applications from young people (18 years and over), those identifying with any of the protected characteristics as defined in the 2010 Equality Act, or who are from less affluent socioeconomic backgrounds.
