Deadline

24 Jan 2020

We are a social enterprise training company, specialising in the area of disability and sex. Currently a dormant CIC, we are in the process of becoming a charity (CIO) for which we need Trustees.

What will you be doing?

Our social media presence is very much at the "foreplay" stage, and we are seeking help to bring it up to "sexpert" level! We need an open-minded social media and marketing savvy person to:

* help us create a pan-disability, highly accessible for all, presence on Twitter, Facebook and beyond

* liaise with our Trustee for Website Design to maximise our ability to help our client group

Our organisation is based in Poole, Dorset. While we focus on Dorset and surrounding areas, we do cover the whole of the UK as and when it's appropriate. As a Trustee for Social Media and Marketing, you can reside anywhere in the UK thanks to web-conferencing.

You will be working directly with Lorraine Stanley (CEO), and Michael Ballard (Trustee). We actively encourage people with lived experience of disability to apply for this role. This includes less visible health conditions, and neurodiverse people.

We can guarantee your time with us will not be boring. Lorraine started on this journey over a decade ago, and is still uncovering interesting stuff! Despite some significant hurdles to overcome, SWAD has continued to move forward. In 2015 we had a stand at the Naidex exhibition and conference in Birmingham. It is safe to say that we had the lowest-tech stand, but it was the busiest by far.

Think about how awkward it can feel to talk to your GP about intimate matters in a private consultation room...well, we had a queue of attendees asking for our advice and information in a very public arena. If we had ever doubted the need for what we offer - those doubts were wiped out by our experience at that event.

A core belief of SWAD is that nobody should have to go through life without the healing quality of skin-to-skin contact. If you can imagine that from this moment on, the only physical contact you will experience for the rest of your life is through protective gloves worn by a careworker; and that this is an unacceptable prospect - you will fit right in with our team.

Due to health issues and caring responsibilities, we don't fit into the neat boxes of a "9 to 5" organisation. We are very flexible about the timings of your volunteering with us, and can accommodate most situations by agreement.

What are we looking for?

Our ideal volunteer for this role

  • Must have experience of designing and delivering a comprehensive social media strategy that meets industry standards for disabled accessibility.
  • Open minded
  • Must have first hand knowledge of the challenges facing disabled people
  • Experience of interacting with disabled people
  • Empathy
  • Patience - brain fog is forecast for most days when working with Lorraine!
  • Collaborative approach to content creation

Nice to have: experience of working within the healthcare sector or for a charity

What difference will you make?

We need someone with the knowledge and skills to transform our very minimal presence on Twitter and Facebook into one that better reflects our professionalism. We have lots of ideas of what we would like to include in our social media presence - but very little knowledge of how to make it happen.

At the moment we are frustrated by our lack of expertise in designing and implementing an accessible, comprehensive and cohesive social media strategy and implementation schedule.. As this Trustee, you will be helping to transform the lives of disabled people by enabling them to have access to support for the more intimate side of their lives. We view sex and intimacy as being just as important an activity of daily living as personal care.

What's in it for the volunteer?

This is a great opportunity to join in at the beginning of an exciting new charity that will influence the quality of life of a limitless amount of disabled people. As part of our friendly team, you will be able to talk about sex a lot, because great content comes out of the ideas sparked by those team conversations. You will directly influence the level of support that healthcare professionals can provide to our target group. Other Trustee opportunities will be published in the near future.

A few more details

Due to the nature of our client group, you must be willing to undergo a DBS check. This is in addition to the standard criteria set by the Charities Commission regarding matters such as bankruptcy etc.

Before you apply

The first step in the process is to send your CV to us via Reach, together with a covering letter explaining why you are interested in joining our group of Trustees.
